The UB is promoting a pioneering study to transform support in neonatal units and redesign assistance for families with premature babies
Coinciding with World Prematurity Day, on November 17, the University of Barcelona (UB), through its knowledge transfer office, the Bosch i Gimpera Foundation (FBG), has signed an agreement with Som Prematurs to carry out the AEFNUN Study (Expert Support in Neonatal Units).
The AEFNUN study aims to evaluate and redesign the expert support programme in neonatal units, analysing its real impact —emotional, practical, and relational— on families and professionals. It is a pioneering project that may become a scientific, academic, and social benchmark, aspiring to consolidate a new model of neonatal care focused on families and developmental care.
The macroproject is led by Som Prematurs, coordinated by Elisabet Farga i Carrera, president of the organisation, while the research is directed from the UB by Dr Verònica Violant, professor at the Faculty of Education and principal investigator of the project through the FBG. The study also includes the participation of Rovira i Virgili University, with Dr Leticia Bazo, and the Spanish Society of Neonatal Nursing (SEEN).
Official World Prematurity Day event
On Sunday, November 23, 2025, the official World Prematurity Day event will be held at CosmoCaixa Barcelona, organised by Som Prematurs, where the AEFNUN project will be publicly presented to various institutions and political representatives of Catalonia.
This event, which brings together broad representation from the healthcare, social, and institutional sectors, will be a key opportunity to strengthen the visibility and reach of the project.
