The awards, granted by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, were presented on 4 May at the Palau Reial de Pedralbes, in a ceremony that highlights the excellence and impact of research at the national level.<\/p>\n<p>The National Research Awards are the highest institutional recognition for research in Spain and honour scientific careers of international relevance, as well as outstanding contributions to the advancement of knowledge and societal progress.<\/p>\n<p>Among the awardees, Dr Montserrat Guill\u00e9n Estany stands out, Full Professor at the Department of Econometrics, Statistics and Applied Economics at the Faculty of Economics and Business, and director of the Risk Center Research Group.<\/p>\n<p>Guill\u00e9n has been awarded the National Research Award \u201cPascual Madoz\u201d in the field of law and social and economic sciences \u00abfor being a pioneering figure and an international reference in risk economics and actuarial science, with a highly impactful academic and scientific career, and work that is profoundly transforming risk analysis and insurance economics in the 21st century\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>An example of this impact is the predictive model developed during the COVID-19 pandemic by Dr Guill\u00e9n and Dr Catalina Bolanc\u00e9, which made it possible to anticipate hospital occupancy in Catalonia and support decision-making to prevent the saturation of the healthcare system. This work illustrates the potential of social sciences research to generate useful tools for managing complex situations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Interview with Dr Montserrat Guill\u00e9n and Dr Catalina Bolanc\u00e9:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fbg.ub.edu\/en\/news\/our-predictive-model-helped-prevent-the-saturation-of-hospitals-in-catalonia\/\">\u201cOur predictive model helped prevent the saturation of hospitals in Catalonia\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_vU5u84xy64?si=f3DuuKekq1OLgWGC\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Other UB researchers recognised<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the same edition, Professor Carme Rovira Virgili, from the Faculty of Chemistry, received the National Research Award \u201cEnrique Moles\u201d in the field of chemical science and technology, becoming the first woman to receive this distinction.
