{"id":24601,"date":"2026-03-18T13:17:44","date_gmt":"2026-03-18T11:17:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.fbg.ub.edu\/?p=24601"},"modified":"2026-04-07T09:51:15","modified_gmt":"2026-04-07T07:51:15","slug":"ub-promotes-a-technology-to-guarantee-data-integrity-and-traceability-in-critical-infrastructures","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fbg.ub.edu\/en\/news\/ub-promotes-a-technology-to-guarantee-data-integrity-and-traceability-in-critical-infrastructures\/","title":{"rendered":"UB promotes a technology to guarantee data integrity and traceability in critical infrastructures"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"6220\" data-end=\"6417\">The integrity of the data collected by sensors that monitor critical infrastructures such as bridges, dams or roads is a key element for managing their maintenance and assessing potential failures.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6419\" data-end=\"6760\">Researchers from the <a href=\"https:\/\/ub.edu\/\">University of Barcelona<\/a> (UB) are collaborating with the company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldsensing.com\/es\/\">Worldsensing<\/a> in a new public\u2013private consortium to develop a technological solution that guarantees the integrity and traceability of this information, protecting it from manipulation and enabling full auditing from the origin of the data to its final use.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6762\" data-end=\"7209\">\u201cThe project develops an integrated tool based on the open RISC-V architecture that will not only capture and transmit information to determine the status of essential infrastructures, but will also ensure that the data are verifiable and have not been altered,\u201d explains \u00c1ngel Di\u00e9guez Barrientos, Full Professor at the Department of Electronic and Biomedical Engineering of the Faculty of Physics, who leads the UB\u2019s participation in the project.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7211\" data-end=\"7468\">Currently, the collection of data from critical infrastructures is carried out through systems that offer continuous monitoring but \u201coften present limitations in traceability and auditability, as well as dependence on manual processes,\u201d says the researcher.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7470\" data-end=\"7756\">The project develops a new generation of <strong data-start=\"7511\" data-end=\"7544\">IoT node (Internet of Things)<\/strong>, an intelligent electronic device connected to the network that integrates sensors, processing capacity and communication systems to capture environmental data, with verifiable authentication and data integrity.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7758\" data-end=\"8188\">The technological core is a <strong data-start=\"7786\" data-end=\"7810\">System on Chip (SoC)<\/strong> that integrates the essential blocks of the device \u2014processor, memory and communication interfaces\u2014 into a single microchip, which reduces size and power consumption while improving performance. In this project, the SoC will incorporate hardware cryptographic accelerators and authentication mechanisms, ensuring that the data remain protected and verifiable from their origin.<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"8190\" data-end=\"8243\" data-section-id=\"w09adt\">Open-source architecture and low power consumption<\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"8245\" data-end=\"8560\">The SoC is based on the open-source <strong data-start=\"8281\" data-end=\"8304\">RISC-V architecture<\/strong>, a technology that allows flexible and customizable hardware design. One of its main advantages is its ability to operate with very low energy consumption, a key feature in IoT applications where devices must function for long periods without maintenance.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"8562\" data-end=\"8766\">\u201cThe high energy efficiency of the IoT node will reduce the need for frequent interventions, allowing operational costs to be optimized and improving the sustainability of the system,\u201d highlights Di\u00e9guez.<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"8768\" data-end=\"8815\" data-section-id=\"10m84x0\">Security and traceability through blockchain<\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"8817\" data-end=\"9147\">Beyond data capture and transmission, the system incorporates encryption and authentication mechanisms directly at the device level, together with an immutable and traceable record through <strong data-start=\"9006\" data-end=\"9031\">blockchain technology<\/strong> at system level. This ensures that the information is protected against tampering and can be transparently audited.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"9149\" data-end=\"9342\">\u201cAs with aircraft black boxes, the secure and immutable storage of infrastructure data is vital to later understand the causes of an accident and prevent future disasters,\u201d notes the professor.<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"9344\" data-end=\"9395\" data-section-id=\"1kcrv65\">Industrial application and real-world validation<\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"9397\" data-end=\"9634\">The solution will allow IoT device manufacturers to integrate this technology into their products as an affordable and efficient alternative to develop secure, low-power devices based on open hardware adaptable to different applications.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"9636\" data-end=\"9876\">At the same time, managers of critical infrastructures will be able to improve the security and reliability of their systems thanks to devices equipped with the new technological solution, which guarantees secure and immutable data storage.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"9878\" data-end=\"10019\">During the three-year project, the technology will be validated under real conditions through integration tests in different infrastructures.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"10021\" data-end=\"10220\">\u201cThe goal is to evaluate both its performance and its ability to guarantee data security through encryption and authentication mechanisms, as well as its energy efficiency,\u201d concludes the researcher.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"10222\" data-end=\"10679\">The project, entitled <strong data-start=\"10244\" data-end=\"10350\">\u201cDevelopment of an Integrated RISC-V-Based Platform for Secure Monitoring of Critical Infrastructures\u201d<\/strong>, will run for three years and has the reference <strong data-start=\"10399\" data-end=\"10417\">CPP2024-011612<\/strong>.
