Gate2Brain secures a €7 million investment to advance its lead therapeutic candidate for the treatment of rare and aggressive brain tumours
The University of Barcelona spin-off Gate2Brain has announced a strategic partnership with Shilpa Biocare Pvt Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Shilpa Medicare Limited, to advance its most advanced therapeutic candidate for the treatment of rare and aggressive brain tumours.
Founded in 2020, the biotechnology company specialises in peptide-based delivery technologies for central nervous system diseases and is also a spin-off of IRB Barcelona and Sant Joan de Déu Children’s Hospital.
A strategic milestone
Shilpa Biocare has become a strategic shareholder in Gate2Brain through a €7 million investment, corresponding to a 30.4% equity stake in the company.
The agreement represents a major milestone for Gate2Brain and the largest investment raised by the company to date, highlighting its growth and progress in less than six years since its foundation.
Advancing G2B-002 and brain drug delivery technologies
One of the main objectives of the partnership is G2B-002, Gate2Brain’s lead therapeutic candidate and a first-in-class therapy for the treatment of aggressive paediatric and adult brain tumours. G2B-002 has received Orphan Drug Designation from both the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA).
G2B-002 uses Gate2Brain’s proprietary MiniAp4 platform to address one of the major challenges in central nervous system diseases: enabling therapies to cross the blood-brain barrier. Preclinical studies have demonstrated improved brain delivery and reduced side effects in paediatric brain tumours.
By combining Gate2Brain’s technology with Shilpa’s expertise in manufacturing, CMC development and regulatory strategy, the collaboration aims to accelerate the clinical development of G2B-002 while expanding the application of the technology platform to additional therapeutic areas and other central nervous system disorders.
This partnership represents an important step in advancing G2B-002 from preclinical development to clinical application and reinforces Gate2Brain’s mission to address unmet medical needs in paediatric brain cancer and other central nervous system diseases, with the goal of providing new therapeutic options for children and families affected by severe brain tumours.
